PluginOS Alt Text

Audit, fix and report on your store’s image alt text for WCAG

Finds the alt text that fails accessibility checks, rewrites it with AI vision, and gives you an exportable WCAG compliance report.

Features

What PluginOS Alt Text does

Eight WCAG checks

Missing, filename, generic, redundant opener, keyword stuffed, over length, duplicate and decorative.

AI rewrites

Failing alt text regenerated with AI vision, previewed before it is saved.

Text inside images

Text rendered into banners and spec sheets is read and carried into the alt text.

Compliance report

Health score, issues by type, WCAG criteria and a before-and-after record, as CSV or PDF.

Variations and languages

Each variation image gets its own alt text; WPML and Polylang languages are followed.

Built for big catalogues

Scans and bulk fixes run in resumable batches, so a job survives a closed tab or a timeout.

Most alt text tools tell you which images have no alt text. That is the easy half. The harder half is the alt text you already have: filenames pasted into the field, the product title repeated word for word, keyword lists, “image of…” openers, and one sentence copied across forty variations. All of it passes a “has alt text” check, and all of it fails WCAG 1.1.1.

PluginOS Alt Text audits the alt text you already have, fixes it properly, and gives you a compliance report you can hand to a client or keep as evidence of good faith.

Eight checks, no guesswork

Every image is scored against eight checks, each mapped to a WCAG success criterion: missing, filename as alt, generic, redundant opener, keyword stuffed, over length, duplicate, and decorative with alt. The checks are deterministic, not AI, so results are stable between runs and explainable to an auditor.

Text inside images

Sale banners, spec sheets and infographic product shots carry text that screen readers and search engines cannot see. The plugin reads it with a vision model, flags the image, and makes sure the new alt text says what the image says.

Careful by default

Product, gallery, variation and category images are never treated as decorative, alt text that passes every check is left alone, and anything ambiguous is flagged for a person to decide. You can preview each change before saving it, and roll any of them back.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key?

You need an AI provider connected in WordPress under Settings → Connectors, shared by every AI feature on the site. The plugin stores no keys of its own and charges no per-image fee.

Does it work without an AI provider?

Partly. The audit, scoring, duplicate detection and reports run entirely locally. Generating alt text and reading text inside images need a provider.

Will it overwrite alt text I wrote myself?

Only if you ask it to. By default it works on images with missing or failing alt text; alt text that passes every check is left alone, and every change can be rolled back.

Can it make my store less accessible?

The defaults are designed so it cannot: product images are never treated as decorative, empty alt text is never applied unless you switch that on, and anything ambiguous is flagged for a person.

Does it handle product variations?

Yes. Each variation with its own image gets its own audit row and its own alt text, written with that variation’s attributes in mind.
